About The Role

Banksia Hill Detention Centre will be opening a new Crisis Care Unit with the vision to provide trauma-informed, developmentally informed, multidisciplinary and coordinated therapeutic support to young people in detention identified as particularly vulnerable.
The Positive Behaviour Support Clinicians will work alongside psychologists, mental health nurses, psychiatrists, speech pathologists, case managers, operational staff, Aboriginal youth support officers and a range of other staff to support young people in a holistic and child centred way.
These roles offer a unique opportunity to contribute to the lives of vulnerable young people in our state, by assisting the centre in understanding the complex needs of a young person, and identifying helpful ways to support their healing.
Working in Custody
In Custody, We Are Currently Offering New Services And Implementing An Enhanced Model Of Care. The Model Reflects Best Practice In Youth Justice And Will Focus On Rehabilitation Through a Trauma-informed, Therapeutic Approach. Some Initiatives Include
- The establishment of the Neurodevelopmental and Mental Health Service in custody. This team works alongside the centre and includes neuropsychologists, a psychiatrist, a speech pathologist, paediatric services and increased access to clinical nurse specialists;
- The intensive mentoring program in the centre, which is available to assist the centre to meet the needs of young people with complex needs;
- A diverse range of therapeutic programs, including art therapy, trauma informed yoga, and therapy animal programs;
- Creation of an Aboriginal Services Unit, which includes additional Aboriginal Youth Support Officers, Aboriginal Support Officers, Aboriginal Mental Health workers and a Manager Aboriginal Services;
- Increasing access for young people to cultural programs and activities;
- The development of a new Crises Care (Trauma Informed) Unit at Banksia Hill Detention Centre.
Eligibility
Permanent positions – To be eligible for appointment to permanent positions in the West Australian Public Sector you must be an Australian citizen or have permanent resident status in Australia.
WWC positions – In accordance with the National Child Safety Principles, people who work directly with children and young people, you must have a current Working with Children Check or be able to successfully apply for one to be eligible for appointment to this position.
Qualifications – Successful Applicants Must Have
- A Tertiary qualification in Psychology and Registered as a Psychologist with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA); OR
- A Tertiary qualification in Occupational Therapy and Registered as a ‘General Registration’ with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA); OR
- A Tertiary qualification in Social Work and Registered with the Australian Association of Social Workers; OR
- A Tertiary degree qualification in Speech Pathology registered as a ‘Practising Membership’ with Speech Pathology Australia (SPA); OR
- An approved 4-year behavioural science degree.

- Sound understanding and applied experience in developing, delivering and implementing Behaviour Support plans.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the function of challenging and other concerning behaviours in young people with a developmental disability.
- Strong understanding and demonstrated knowledge of a range of models and strategies to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions that influence behaviours of concern.
- Demonstrated experience in completing Functional Behaviour Assessments (FBA), Functional Capacity Assessment’s (FCA), Individual Engagement Plans (IEPs), Trauma Profiles or other behavioural profiles that address behaviours of concern to the young person, their responsible adult and that may contribute to ongoing involvement with the Justice system
- A (redacted) example of a Functional Capacity Assessment, Functional Behaviour Assessment, Individual Engagement Plan, Trauma Profile or other behavioural profile that you have completed in the past
- A copy of your qualification as set out in the above Eligibility section.
