Job Summary
The City is a participating agency of the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) with a 2.7%@55 retirement formula. Employees are required to reimburse the City for the cost of the enhanced retirement formula, with the reimbursement being 6.67% of the employee’s PERSable compensation. The City pays the employee contribution to PERS(8%). In addition, the City participates in the Medicare portion of FICA only, and therefore there is no deduction made for social security.
Maintains and repairs the facilities at the Swim Center and other City operated aquatic facilities. Ensures proper water chemistry is maintained at all City operated swimming pools. Leads, schedules and assists crews engaged in the maintenance of aquatics facilities.
Classification specification pending Personnel Board approval.
NOTE: The eligible list that will be established as a result of this recruitment will be used to fill all full-time and permanent part-time Aquatics Maintenance Worker vacancies that occur in the City during the life of the list.
Representative Duties
Monitors and maintains the water chemistry of the swimming pools. Tests water chemistry on a daily basis. Adds appropriate chemicals to maintain the proper water chemistry, as required. Leads, trains, schedules and assists a crew. Provides detailed work assignments and reviews work.
Performs custodial duties and oversees the work of assigned staff at the Swim Center and other City operated aquatic facilities, delegating and monitoring work, as assigned.
Inspects, repairs and ensures proper functioning of pool equipment including the pumps, thermostat, and controller.
Cleans and disinfects both indoor and outdoor areas of the City’s Swim Center and other City operated aquatic facilities. Ensures that shower areas and restrooms are clean and sanitary. Stocks and replenishes restrooms with supplies.
Vacuums pools.
Removes graffiti by painting or utilizing graffiti removal products.
Responds to service inquiries and complaints from the public and City departments. Takes appropriate action to resolve issues and complaints.
Orders supplies. Requisitions and maintains inventory of supplies and equipment.
Secures door locks and windows for assigned City facilities.
Follows applicable safety rules and regulations.
Performs other related duties, as assigned.
Requirements
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
Knowledge Of
Swimming pool water chemistry and pool equipment.
Methods and techniques of water sterilization, chlorination, and PH balancing.
Basic carpentry and electrical principles.
Basic mathematics.
Use of manual and power tools and pool cleaning equipment.
Cleansers and chemicals used in pool maintenance.
City and Cal-OSHA safe work practices and procedures including proper handling of pool chemicals.
Effective customer service techniques.
Principles and practices of leading and coordinating the work of others.

Education, Training and Experience
High school graduation or the equivalent.
Two years of recent, paid work experience performing custodial duties which has included the use of related power cleaning equipment, and/or two years of recent, paid work experience in the operation, maintenance, cleaning, and servicing of swimming pools.
Licenses And Certificates
Possession of a valid Class C driver license.
Must obtain a Swimming Pool Service Technician Certificate as required by the County of Los Angeles Health Department within six months from date of hire.
